FAQs

 

1. What does functional mean?
Functional, as it relates to food, simply means that the ingredient serves a function (or purpose) in the body. In our mixes, each ingredient serves a healthy and natural function. No ingredient is "wasted" when digested. For example, almond flour contains healthy fats and protein; that's the function it serves in our body. For each product, you'll be able to find the function our ingredients serve on the product page.
2. What does Ayurveda mean?
In Sanskrit (the primary liturgical language of Hinduism), Ayurveda means "The Science of Life". Ayurveda is known to be one of the oldest forms of medicine, and one of the most natural forms of medicine. It looks at a human being holistically ("in whole"), mind, body, and soul. Ayurveda emphasizes that by understanding our bio-individuality,  we can maintain balance, health, and longevity, through applying the right unique diet, lifestyle changes, herbs, and right thinking. 
3. What are Adaptogens and do the benefits remain when baked?
Adaptogens are herbs that aid our bodies in reacting to or recovering from both short- and long-term physical or mental stress. Some also boost immunity and overall well-being (source: Healthline and mdpi). While we are finalizing our scientific studies to support that adaptogens are not (or less) impacted when heated, we know that many are used in traditional Indian cooking and hot beverages. As with cooking any plant, the nutritional benefits may decrease slightly, but not enough to negate the value provided.
4. Are your mixes vegan, gluten free, and paleo?
All three of our mixes are vegan, gluten free, organic, and sustainably sourced. Calming Chocolate Chip and Cooling Mint Chocolate are Paleo (assuming mixes are prepared without peanut butter). Revitalizing Oat Ginger is not Paleo. 
5. Is Maple Sugar and Coconut Sugar the only sweeteners?
Yes, that's it! We chose 100% natural organic sweeteners, that are pure, no additives or fillers, and have nutritional benefits. Maple Sugar is made when the sap of the maple tree is boiled for a longer period of time than it is for maple syrup. We source our maple from small farms in Vermont and trust the efficacy. Pure Maple Sugar contains antioxidants, zinc, magnesium, riboflavin, calcium, and potassium, just as the pure syrup does. Coconut Palm Sugar is made in a similar manner to Maple. It is made from the sap of flower buds from the coconut palm tree. The sap is boiled over moderate heat to evaporate most of the water content, resulting in the caramel tasting "sweetener." Similar to maple, coconut sugar retains nutritional value from the tree it's made from, notably zinc, potassium, iron, calcium, and short chain fatty acids like polyphenols and antioxidants. We like to use coconut sugar for it's great taste, but also because it contains a fiber called inulin which is known to slow glucose absorption and is suggested to be the reason Coconut Sugar is considered to have a much lower glycemic index than regular processed sugars. 
6. What nut butter do you suggest? Can I swap the nut butter for anything?

7. What would you suggest if I'm allergic to nuts?
I created Revitalizing Oat Ginger as a completely nut free option. I recommend baking this mix with Tahini (that's what I do!) and it's delicious! You can also use Sunflower Butter, but note that when sunflower butter mixes with baking soda, it turns the baked item green (thanks to the natural chlorophyll in sunflower seeds), but it's completely safe to eat!
8. What is the shelf life? Do I need to store the mixes in the refrigerator?
While the mixes are pantry stable, because we do not use ANY preservatives or additives to maintain longer shelf life, we suggest using within six months of purchase. We recommend storing the mixes in the refrigerator if not opened within two months of purchase to ensure the ingredients maintain their freshness. Once baked, cookies can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks, and longer in the freezer. 
9. Are your mixes Keto?
While our mission and values are to stay away from any diet labeling, instead focusing on the idea of bio-individuality, our cookie mixes are very low in carbohydrates and sugar, as you'll see on the nutritional labels. 
10. Because the mixes are vegan, is the dough safe to eat raw?
I love this question, the answer is a big YES! The dough is delicious and safe to eat. Every ingredient, including baking soda, is safe to eat raw. That’s one reason I love plant based baking!
11. Are these cookies safe for children?
Yes! Our no mess baking mixes make for a great activity to include your children in. Of course, we advise that you review the ingredients for any allergies and consult your child’s physician if you have any concerns.
12.  How long does shipping take?
We strive to ship orders within 3 business days of when the order is placed. We ship either First Class or Priority Shipping (usually 2-5 business days).
13. I'm not familiar with many of these superfoods or adaptogens, will I be able to taste them?
It depends on your palate! Each mix is created to balance the earthy & natural taste of these powerful herbs, superfoods, and adaptogens with the satisfying sweet taste of the pure maple or coconut sugar we use. For the Calming Chocolate Chip, you may taste a very modest earthy bitter taste, which comes from the Holy Basil, which is a powerful and beneficial herb. In the Cooling Mint Chocolate, you may slightly taste the green Spirulina, due to it's high chlorophyll content, which is loaded with antioxidants. In Revitalizing Oat Ginger, the vibrant ginger spice may come through, which is perfect for your gut! Whole, real, superfoods are great for your overall health, so we encourage you to give them a shot!
